Accommodations

Note: “Accommodations” on this page refers to testing accommodations e.g. disability or religious accommodations. Inspire Global Assessments does not provide, arrange, or recommend hotel or lodging accommodations for candidates.

What are testing accommodations?

A testing accommodation is a modification/adjustment to the standard assessment parameters or environment. An accommodation must be based on a professionally recognized diagnosis of a disability, impairment, condition, or disorder (or any other grounds listed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or the BC Human Rights Code). In some cases, accommodations may be made to observe a spiritual or religious observance.

What does Inspire’s assessment look like, and how might accommodations apply?

Every accommodation need is unique, so it’s always best to contact the Inspire team as early as possible.

Below, you will find examples of how some common accommodations (extra time and/or breaks) might be applicable to different parts of the Inspire assessment. To learn more, please contact us to request a consultation, and our team will review your needs and determine how best to support you through your assessments.

    • Computer-Based Assessment (CBA):
      • This is a timed, written exam where you’ll read the questions and submit your responses on an online platform. Please visit our CBA page to learn more about the question types and what you can expect.
      • The assessment may be taken online with a remote proctor, or at a Prometric testing centre.
      • If you require an extra time accommodation, this would be added to your total writing time. For example, if your documentation specifies 25% extra time, you would receive 6 hours and 15 minutes to complete your CBA, if the standard time is 5 hours.
      • Break time may also be added to your CBA if specified in your documentation.

    • Simulation Lab Assessment (SLA):
      • This is a hands-on, scenario-based assessment.
      • Each scenario consists of:
        1. A 5-minute chart read time. This is your time to read the patient chart and scenario objectives, understand the patient case, and make any notes you’d like.
        2. A 20-minute simulation scenario. This is your time to interact with your patient and demonstrate your hands-on skills in your nursing or HCA role.
      • Extra time accommodations would apply to the chart read time only – for example, if your documentation specifies 25% extra time, you would receive 6.25 minutes to complete your chart read, instead of 5 minutes.
      • Extra break time may be applied to the rest time in between scenarios, but generally cannot be taken in the middle of a scenario.

If you need to do your assessment at a particular time of day, or have a break at a specific time (for religious purposes, for example) we recommend selecting CBA and SLA appointments which do not conflict with those needs. If that is not possible, please contact Inspire to discuss your options prior to booking your assessments.

How to request accommodations

    • Contact us to apply for a testing accommodation.
    • Complete the accommodation request form [link to PDF form]
    • You may need to provide medical documentation. Documentation does not need to include diagnosis or detailed health information, but it must specify exactly which testing accommodations are required (example: letter of accommodation from a post-secondary institution; physician’s note which includes specific testing accommodations required).
    • For extra time accommodations, if the amount of extra time is not specified in your documentation, the default is 25% extra time.
    • All accommodations must be requested and approved prior to booking your CBA and SLA. Please do not book your assessments until the Inspire team confirms that your accommodations are approved and in place.
    • Any requested changes or additions to accommodations cannot be made after you have booked your assessments.

Please note that your accommodation request and supporting documentation may require approval by the applicable regulator and may be shared to facilitate that approval and/or may be included as part of your final Inspire Global Assessments package.

Applicability of Accommodations

Inspire will always strive to support candidates and provide appropriate accommodations where possible. Please note that some accommodations may not be applicable in some assessment settings.

Accommodation costs

There is no fee for requesting an accommodation; however, you are responsible for any costs associated with collecting the supporting documentation (e.g., assessment/reporting fees charged by health professionals to assess you or provide documentation, etc.).
